Julia cupped her morning coffee in the dining room, letting the warmth seep into her palms as she listened to Dot recount the strange events of the previous night. She had to admit, Dot and Percy’s late-night escapades following Doctor Helena raised more questions than it answered.

“You’re saying Helena met this man at some kind of rave, and he gave her these lab results matching the mineral content of the water?” Julia asked in a hushed voice, leaning in closer across the table.

Dot nodded, her expression grim. “It’s mighty suspicious if you ask me. Why go to all that trouble to get new results when she claimed she already had proof?”

“Maybe she lost the original documents?” Jessie suggested, though it didn’t sound like she quite believed that theory herself.

“Or maybe she had no legitimate results in the first place,” Julia said.

She glanced over at the paper again, reading the list of minerals and compounds. It seemed similar to what Dahlia and Helena had been claiming about the healing spring waters. Too similar to be a coincidence.

What had Minnie got herself wrapped up in?

Julia glanced up from her coffee as her sister slid into the seat beside her.

“Morning,” Sue said, stifling a yawn. “Neil’s taken the kids to some museum, but I’m still feeling seasick from that boat trip yesterday. Was someone else up being sick last night? I could have sworn I heard retching down the hall.”

“That’ll have been Ethel,” Dot said, rolling her eyes. “Seems she had the wildest night out of us. I do not know how she got back into her room because I found her key card in my handbag this morning.”

“Magic,” Jessie said.

“Speaking of magic,” Sue said, pouring herself a cup of coffee from the French press, “I saw that note you slipped under my door last night, Gran.”

“And?” Dot leaned in. “Did you?”

“I did.” Sue took her first slurp of coffee. “I popped into my old nursing group chat to ask if anyone knew about a Doctor Helena Ford.”

Julia leaned in, intrigued. She had suspected there was more to Helena’s story than the polished, enlightened persona she portrayed, even before her gran’s late-night rave stalking.

“Go on,” she urged.

“One of my old colleagues, Mary, came up trumps. Her sister is a doctor, and she is best friends with a surgeon who once dated Helena,” Sue explained, glancing around the dining room—they were alone except for Ian, who hadn’t opened his eyes from his meditating in the corner since Julia had turned up. “According to Mary, Helena isn’t who she claims to be.”

“I knew it!” Dot said, slapping the table. “I bet she’s not an actual doctor.”

“You’re not far off, Gran. She was a doctor, but she had her medical license stripped last spring.”

“Stripped?” Jessie said, choking on her orange juice. “You’re kidding? What did she do? Kill someone?”

“Again, not far off.” Sue leaned in even closer. “Helena was working as a GP in London. Busy surgery with tons of patients. The type of place where
